Founded in late 2022, Following the yuan is a business newsletter focused on how and why Chinese people spend their money.

Aimed at a business and financial audience, we aim to provide original reporting and analysis on China's consumer market in an economic downturn, and ‘color’ beyond the earnings calls and market reports.

Our name was chosen to represent the People’s Squares or People’s Parks that are commonplace in Chinese cities. They serve as social gathering points for different generations, accommodating a steady flow of people and generating a diversity of ideas and activities.

People’s Square is a London-based (for now!) community of brands, consultants, academics, researchers and creatives who aspire to explore and discuss China from a human-centered lens. Our past events including consumer trend talks, film viewings and book club.
